Finedon Festival Chorus

This has been established to sing for Festal Evensongs at St Mary's.  Members consist of the choir of St Mary the Virgin, Finedon plus visiting singers from local choirs and the local area. The conductor is Robert Page and organist Jonathan Harris (Director of Music). Please get in touch if you are interested in coming to sing by emailing us.

2019 events: 

Sunday 15th September - Festal Evensong as part of the church Flower Festival

Any visiting singers are welcome to join our enhanced choir to sing choral evensong on Sunday 15th September at St Mary's, Finedon. We rehearse on the day at 4.30pm before the 6pm service. Dress is choir robes, dark suits or all black. You're welcome to attend any of our Friday 7pm choir practices too.

Copies of the music are available from church or by email. The music includes Parry's Blest Pair Of Sirens, O Sing Unto The Lord by Chris Hutchings (a friend of the choir), Stanford's Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in C and the responses by Ayleward.

Sunday 2 June - Come and Sing Choral Evensong for RSCM Sunday

Visiting singers are welcome and invited to join us for a Come and Sing Evensong. 4.30pm rehearsal with music including MacMillan's O Radiant Dawn, Gorecki's Totus Tuus, Responses and Canticles by Tallis. The service at 6pm will be led by Revd Richard Coles. Our Director of Music, Jonathan Harris, will be directing the choir and playing the organ, All are welcome. Donations split 50/50 between RSCM and the church. Please let us know in advance if you are able to come and sing.


A Service of Readings, Music and Contemplation on Good Friday

Visiting singers are welcome to sing at St Mary's, Finedon, on Good Friday

Please let us know if you are available to sing at this service. We will have hard copies of all the music at church on the day but I can email you some of the music in advance if you like.

Dress for visiting singers is all black or dark suits, or cassocks.

Saturday 22nd December - Come & Sing Messiah Part One with Carols

2.30pm Full Choir Rehearsal

4.30pm Performance

Visiting singers are welcome to join us for this occasion. No cost. We will use the Prout edition of Messiah - we have plenty of spare copies if you need one. 

The soloists are mostly the same as last year including Ben Ellis (bass), Stephen George (tenor) and Joanna Arnold (alto), with a string ensemble made up mostly of music college students led by Michael Needle. Dress is all black or dark suits.

Please email the Director of Music (or tell a member of the choir) to let us know that you're coming and which voice part you sing. Last year we had a choir of around 50 singers for this popular event. An excellent way of getting in the Christmas mood.

Rehearsal on the day will be at 12.30pm, plus the preceding Fridays at 7pm. Get in touch with the Director of Music if you can join us. (On the day is acceptable if you prepare and let us know in advance.)

Sunday 12th June at 6pm - Festal Evensong to celebrate the Queen's 90th Birthday celebrations (our RSCM Music Sunday event).

Visiting singers are welcome to join us. We will have a rehearsal on the day at 4.30pm.

The music will be: Introit - Handel's Zadok the Priest, Responses - Smith, Psalm 150 (Stanford), Canticles - Stanford in Bb, Anthem - Parry's I was glad (with vivats), Hymns - National Anthem and All people that on earth do dwell (arr. Vaughan Williams). Organ Voluntary - J.S.Bach Toccata and fugue in d minor BWV565.

Introit: James Kent Thine, O Lord, is the greatness (James Kent was the first organist of Finedon, 1717 onwards); Responses: Ayleward; Psalm 119 v137-144 (from Parish Psalter with Chants); Hymn 371 All praise to our redeeming Lord (Music by William Jones – curate of Finedon in the 1750s); Canticles: Daniel Purcell in E minor; Anthem: Handel Let the hand be strengthened (one of the Coronation Anthems); Hymn 537 O God, our help in ages past (Music by William Croft who gave the opening organ recital in Finedon in 1717), enveloped by J.S.Bach's Prelude and fugue in Eb major (St Anne) BWV 552 as the organ voluntary before and after the service.

Sunday 7th June at 6pm - Come & Sing Choral Evensong to mark the 800th anniversary of the signing of Magna Carta (RSCM Music Sunday event). Rehearsal at 4pm. Service led by Revd Richard Coles on the theme of social justice. Donations at the service will be split 50/50 between church funds and RSCM. Visiting singers welcome. Friday 3rd April at 2pm - A Service of Readings, Music and Contemplation for Good Friday. Music included Victoria's The Reproaches, Durufle's Ubi Caritas and Philip Moore's Benedictus, concluding with the organ solo Sounding Heaven and Earth by Cecilia McDowall.

Sunday 6th July at 6pm - Come & Sing Choral Evensong accompanied by a consort of viols (an RSCM Sunday event). Music includes Gibbons' This is the record of John, Purcell's Rejoice in the Lord alway and his Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in G minor.

Friday 18th April at 2pm - a Good Friday service of readings, music and contemplation. Music to include Allegri's Miserere, Handel's Worthy is the Lamb & He was despised from Messiah, Elgar's Ave Verum Corpus, movements from Schubert's Mass in G and Farrant's Lord, for thy tender mercies sake.

Flower Festival - Festal Evensong - Sunday 15th September at 6pm (Rehearsal at 4.30pm). Plus rehearsals on the preceding Fridays from 7pm. Music included Parry's Blest Pair of Sirens, Dyson in C and James Macmillan's O Radiant Dawn. 46 singers were in the choir for this occasion.

Sunday 16th September 2012 at 6pm - Flower Festival Evensong

Music included: Anthems: Handel - Halleluiah Chorus & Gorecki - Totus Tuus; Canticles - Stanford in Bb; Introit - Robert Page All men are like grass (premiere- commissioned for this service); Responses - Tallis; Psalm 61 Hear my cry, O God (Jonathan Harris).

Sunday 29th July 2012  - Northamptonshire County Council Civic Service. Music included Handel's Halleluiah Chorus and Bach's Toccata & Fugue in D minor BWV565 (organ solo).

Sunday 3rd June 2012 - Festal Evensong to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Music included: Anthem - Parry I was glad; Canticles - Stanford in Bb; Responses - Smith; Psalm - 150 (Stanford); Introit - Javier Busto Ave Maria.
